From Evidence to Action: HQIA Formative Assessment for English Learners

Intended Audience: K-12 Teachers and Administrators

How can educators use formative assessment to understand not only what English Learners know, but also how they are developing language through academic learning? In this hands-on institute, participants will explore the Formative Assessment criterion of Alabama's High-Quality Instruction and Assessment (HQIA) protocol for English Learners. Through interactive learning activities, classroom examples, implementation tools, and practice-based instructional and coaching scenarios, participants will examine how formative assessment can be used to gather evidence of both language development and content learning. Participants will explore strategies for providing actionable feedback, identifying misconceptions, and making instructional adjustments that promote both linguistic and academic growth. Attendees will leave with practical tools and resources that can be immediately applied in classrooms, coaching cycles, professional learning communities, and school improvement efforts.
